Day 5 Sporting Events

Wednesday 1st August

Before many people will have had their morning coffee, three rowing medal events will be decided at Eton Dorney on Day Five. First up is the women's pair for which Britain's Helen Glover and Heather Stanning seek to hold off the challenge from New Zealand to win GB's first ever women's rowing gold. The blue riband rowing event – the men's eights – is expected to see Great Britain and Germany go head to head, with GB's Greg Searle, 40, aiming for a fairytale ending to his career 20 years after his first gold. Cycling is enjoying a boon on the back of Bradley Wiggins's Tour de France triumph – and the triple Olympic track gold medalist is one of the favourites for the men's road cycling time trial at Hampton Court, while Emma Pooley is GB's main hope in the women's event. The men's individual all-around gymnastics final takes place at North Greenwich Arena, while it's another charged day for swimming in the Aquatics Centre with an evening that features Britain's Ellen Gandy in the 200m butterfly and Australia's new golden boy James Magnussen in the men's 100m freestyle final. Great Britain take on Uruguay in football at Wembley Stadium.

Gold medals up for grabs: 20
Today's medal sports: rowing, road cycling, diving, canoe slalom, shooting, table tennis, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, swimming, fencing

Non sporting events on Day 5 around London

Wednesday 1st August

A range of cultural events in London runs alongside the Olympics. The much anticipated Meltdown festival, curated by Antony Hegarty this year, begins tonight with a performance by Janine Rostron, "Bolton's answer to Grace Jones" (The Guardian), who is also known as Planningtorock. She shares the bill with electronic two-piece Light Asylum, and both performers play DJ sets at a special after-show party - exclusive to, and free for ticket holders. There's more music from British reggae vocalist Maxi Priest, Jamaican singer Freddie McGregor and Marcia Griffiths who perform at the Indig02 as part of the Jamaica 50 festival. And at 9.40pm head to the BT London Live stage in Hyde Park to see the Levellers play a free concert along with all the Olympics action televised live on the big screen. At The Camden Head, as part of the Camden Fringe festival, Rosie Wilby ponders why her petition to introduce Swingball as an Olympic sport by the 2012 London games stalled at 32 signatures. Jeremy Deller's Bouncy Stonehenge comes to Hampstead Heath for one day only and will be appearing at several London parks as part of a nationwide tour. It's Switzerland's National Day so the House of Switzerland in Glaziers Hall is a good place to join in the celebrations which include storytellling, folk music and an appearance from Swiss wrestling champion Kilian Wenger. There's a nod to the next Olympic host city as Rio Occupation comes to a close with a three-day festival finale at The Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey. And, just opened, Brazilian artists Marcos Saboya and Gualter Pupo have created a book maze in the Southbank's Clore Ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall; made of 250,000 books, aMAZEme is part of the London 2012 Festival and it's free.

Last chance: Invisible: Art about the Unseen, until 5th August at the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre.
