Don't let the lovely summer weather and long days stop you pursuing your favourite hobby of watching films. With a number of parks, roofs and open spaces across London now offering special outdoor movie screenings, you no longer have to watch films couped up inside grim multiplexes in the dark. We take a look at the best outdoor screening and open-air film events in London over the summer.

Rooftop Film Club at Queen of Hoxton

Films are screened in the secret den of the Luchadores.

Now a celebrated and integral part of Shoreditch summer nights, the Rooftop Film Club at the Queen of Hoxton rooftop terrace returns for its summer screening series, which sees a range of classic, cult and recent releases shown on a big screen on the roof. This year the space has been transformed into the secret den of the Luchadores (lady wrestlers) in Las Mexicanas. The experience is far cry from the usual cinema multiplex fodder - with guests able to sit back under the glow of The City's skyline as they enjoy their favourite films with a drink in hand. Wireless headphones, a massive screen, comfy chairs, blankets, drinks and bar food makes for a great all-round experience - and the setting really is quite something. The Rooftop Film Club has also returned to the Bussey Building in Southwark and Roof East in Stratford.

The huge roof terrace of the Bussey Building in Peckham Rye is one of three venues for the Rooftop Film Club this summer with a series of films that gets under way on Thursday 9th May with a screening of Amelie. The 5,000 square foot terrace boasts magnificent panoramic views of London, while guests can enjoy food from Rockadollar, a fully licensed bar serving cocktails and cold drinks while they enjoy a selection of classic films shown on a big screen with wireless headphones and comfy seats. The 2019 programme includes new rock biopics Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody, family favourites Mary Poppins Returns and Detective Pikachu as well as classics like Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman and The Big Lebowski. Rooftop Film Club at Roof East

On the 7th floor of a multi-storey car park in Stratford the Rooftop Film Club returns for another summer of new releases and cherished classics. The Roof East season kicks off at the beginning of May with Queen blockbuster Bohemian Rhapsody where you are invited to sing-along in an epic rendition of 'We Are The Champions'. Spiceworld, Mean Girls, Before Sunset and The Breakfast Club are just four of the 37 films on the 2019 programme. Not only do you get to see a film, there's also great food and cool refreshments on offer to enjoy with your favourite flick. All this in an unique alfresco setting where you can see the movies under the stars. One of three Rooftop Film Club locations in London, you can also find them at the Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch and the Bussey Building in Peckham Rye.

 
 
 

The Luna Cinema 2019

Luna presents 175 outdoor screenings and celebrates fifteen years of Mean Girls with an immersive experience.

Described as "the kings of the outdoor cinema experience" (Tatler), The Luna Cinema continues its tradition of pairing movies with amazing locations with its summer 2019 season, which sees screenings take place at venues like Kensington Palace (where The Young Victoria marks the 200th anniversary of Victoria's birth), Hampton Court Palace and Westminster Abbey. New sites for 2019 include the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, Thorpe Park and Marble Hill Park. A showcase of cinema old and new, the line-up includes classics like Romeo And Juliet, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Moulin Rouge! (at Kenwood House and Chiswick House) as well as newer releases such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again! and The Favourite. Luna Kids adds a special half term season and Mary Poppins Returns is shown in the shadow of the Houses of Parliament (the setting for the film's climax) at Victoria Tower Gardens. Marking 15 years of Mean Girls, Luna stages an immersive screening in Marylebone as Seymour Leisure Centre is transformed into North Shore High School for four nights only.

 
 
 

Secret Cinema: Casino Royale

Channel your inner Bond and join M and Q in an immersive version of the critically acclaimed 007 film.

This spring and summer, Secret Cinema goes undercover to channel Bond, James Bond when it presents a fully immersive show of the critically acclaimed 007 film Casino Royale. Taking the 2006 version, directed by Martin Campbell and starring Daniel Craig as James Bond, the show transforms a secret London location into the glamorous and action-packed world of the iconic British spy. Blurring the lines between fiction and reality, the experience recreates scenes and locations from the film. You, the audience, will be required to get into character and you'll be assigned to either Q Branch or M Branch. Prior to your mission, you will receive an alias, dress code and training suggestions to help you prepare for a night of high stakes, sophistication and deception. If previous Secret Cinema productions are anything to go by, you'll feel like you're on the set of the film... and what a fantastic film to be dropped into.

The open air Nomad Cinema comes to Citypoint this summer for two four day stints in June and July. Screened Tuesday to Friday, the first week starts with Yorgos Lanthimos's deliciously cruel comedy, The Favourite, and continues with cult classic Labyrinth, A Star is Born featuring Lady Gaga and The Greatest Showman. Week two, from Tuesday 16th July, brings Marilyn Monroe in Some Like it Hot, the Oscar-winning true story Green Book, Blade Runner: The Final Cut and 1989 film Do the Right Thing. Enjoy the movies under the stars in the heart of the City with seats and Wi-Fi headsets provided.

 
 
 

Summer by the River: Free Film Festival at The Scoop

One of London's most popular outdoor screening events - and it's free.

One of London's most popular outdoor screening events takes place at The Scoop, a 1,000-seat amphitheatre located between HMS Belfast and Tower Bridge in the shadow of City Hall on the south bank of the Thames. Every Tuesday from June to September there are current, classical and cult films on the big screen. The free, outdoor cinema screenings are part of London Bridge City's Summer by the River festival which this year takes on an English country garden theme. Also on the big screen are summer sports including Wimbledon, Ascot and the cricket as well as free theatre, live comedy and music, fun family days, fitness classes and events to let your hair down on a Friday.

 
 
 

British Summer Time: Open House

Between two long weekends of big British Summer Time gigs, Hyde Park hosts Open House, four midweek days of free outdoor films, live music and entertainment. Open from 12noon, there are family friendly films and free theatre as well as tennis, live from Wimbledon, making this a great place to put down a picnic rug on a sunny afternoon. Outdoor movies are also shown in the evening when live music plays from 6pm through to 10pm featuring every genre from gospel to pop. You'll also get the chance to try out the flying trapeze, play pingpong or hip hop bingo while street food stalls and pop up bars keep you refuelled and refreshed.

 
 
 

Floating Film Festival

Central London's only marina St Katharine Docksplays host to the Floating Film Festival this July, with recent cinematic favourites shown on the big screen on the floating pontoon. Oscar-winning films Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born will both be shown twice while other movies on the line-up include Mary Poppins Returns, First Man, The Greatest Showman, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Aquaman. Film showings start at 7pm and there are two family screenings on Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Step on board the floating platform, pull up a deck chair or snuggle down in a bean bag and watch some all-time favourites complete with snacks, craft beers and cocktails.

 
 
 

Backyard Cinema: L.A. Nights

The sun-kissed beaches of the West Coast are recreated in north London.

Bringing the beach vibes of LA to the Roundhouse this summer, Backyard Cinema recreates the sun-kissed beaches of the West Coast for a laid back setting where you can watch popular films on the big screen, alongside 400 other movie goers. Known for their immersive productions, the crew has created an indoor beach with giant bean bags on the sand, palm trees and a retro beach bar. The perfect setting for their sing-a-long beach parties. On the line-up are the latest blockbusters including Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie 2 and Captain Marvel, award-winning new releases including BlackkKlansman, A Star is Born and Stan and Ollie and classics like Back to the Future and Clueless.

 
 
 
 

Outdoor Pedal Powered Film Screenings

Enjoy free pedal powered outdoor film screenings on the Royal Festival Hall riverside terrace, as part of the Southbank Centre's summer entertainment. Jump on one of the bikes to pedal power the screen or grab some popcorn and take a seat for the screenings on Wednesday nights in July and August. Presented by Electric Pedals, the programme includes something for everyone with Little Shop of Horrors (24th July), Chicago (31st July), Moulin Rouge (14th August) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show on 21st August. It's just one of the many free events and activities at the 17-acre Southbank Centre site. Enjoy a drink at sunset up at the Queen Elizabeth Roof Garden, try not to get wet at Appearing Rooms, stay tuned for Nile Rodgers' Meltdown and enjoy Jean Paul Gaultier's extravagant new Fashion Freak Show.

The most famous of all the open air film events in London, Film4 Summer Screen returns to Somerset House to bring cinema lovers a truly eclectic mix of outdoor movies. This year's line-up includes the Oscar-nominated Black Panther, '90s comedy Clueless, love story God's Own Country and Shane Meadows' This is England. As well as the evening's feature film, there are DJ sets inspired by the main event, al fresco picnics and a fabulous summer vibe. Additionally, Behind the Screen presents panel discussions and conversations from industry insiders who are shaping the world of cinema today.

 
 
 

Sunset Cinema: Film Nights with Samsung Screenings

John Lewis Roof Fest screens classic on a giant Samsung TV.

As part of this year's John Lewis Roof Fest, the venue will be hosting the Sunset Cinema: Film Nights with Samsung Screenings. Running from July through to September, the al fresco cinema screens feel-good movies and old school classics on an 82" Samsung TV atop the Oxford Street store. Guests can sit back in a deck chair and watch films like The Italian Job, Back to the Future, Big, Top Gun and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, all while sipping on a complimentary beer, glass of house wine or soft drink.
