Lighting up London's main waterway, Illuminated River will be one of the longest public art projects in the world when it's complete in 2022 - stretching 4.5 nautical miles between Albert Bridge and Tower Bridge. Opening in phases, summer 2019 introduced the first four River Thames crossings - London Bridge and the Cannon Street, Southwark and Millennium bridges - and a further five are to be added by winter 2020 - bringing light to Blackfriars, Waterloo, Lambeth and Westminster bridges as well as the Golden Jubilee Footbridge (formerly Hungerford Bridge). A total of 14 central London bridges are involved in the project by artist Leo Villareal who has created changing sequences of LEDs for each bridge. The wildlife friendly project, which keeps energy use to a minimum, makes the river a more appealing place to visit at night and is expected to last 10 years, until 2029.

The River Thames, part of the longest river in England, is the waterway that winds its way through the centre of the capital. Once a bustling trade route bringing foreign trade to the city, it's now more commonly used for recreational purposes and the non-conformist commmuter. More about River Thames
