Monochrome: Painting in Black and WhiteDiscover the origins of black and white paintings with The National Gallery's new exhibition, Monochrome: Painting in Black and White. From its beginnings in the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and into the 21st century, the first exhibition of its kind will explore the tradition of painting with predominantly black and white pigments, which has long held a fascination for artists. From early religious works to paintings that emulate sculpture, there will be a display of case studies that investigate where and when grisaille painting was used and to what effect. Works by the likes of Rembrandt, Picasso and Gerhard Richter will be showcased, with everything from glass and vellum to ceramic and canvas.

About National Gallery

The National Gallery dominates London's Trafalgar Square with its neo-classical columns and portico designed by William Wilkins adjoining the square on its east side where it has been pedestrianised. Some of the finest examples of European art, ranging from 1260 to 1900, are included among the 2,300 paintings filling its halls and rooms. More about National Gallery
